KVOE radio sponsors “The Nuestra Musica Radio Show”, a two-hour Tex-Mex program on Sundays from 5-7p.m.

Victor Rodriguez, disc jockey for “The Nuestra Musica Radio Show”, said there was a need for the program in Emporia. So far, he has been on the program for five years. "There were people that always wanted a Spanish program," Rodriguez said. "I know there is a market out there for it. Students listen to the program, and even people from out of town. I know the program gets out and about," Rodriguez said.

"I've been trying for the last couple of years to expand the show. It's mostly Tex-Mex, which has a country flavor and kind of a light-rock flavor." Rodriguez said.

The program has commercials in both English and Spanish, something Rodriguez calls "Spanglish." He said he works closely with the Catholic nuns from St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in town and tries to make things more available to the Hispanic community. Rodriguez said during the last seven years he has given away tickets to the Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio and the Tejano Connection Awards in Dallas.

All in all, Rodriguez said the show is "doing pretty good and keeping strong." Rodriguez also owns El Mercadtio, 210 S. Lawrence, and reads La Voz Latina. Rodriguez said, "I wish they would have done it earlier. For right now, it's pretty good." "Little by little, things in the Spanish community are getting a little bit better," Rodriguez said. Lee Schroeder, sales executive of KVOE, estimated the number of Spanish-speaking listeners to be around 4,500..."
